Following the events told in Pompeii A Tale of Murder in Ancient Rome

In the aftermath of the earthquake, rumors swirl that a woman thought to have been killed by the disaster was seen alive hours after the last aftershock.

Marcellus stumbles across a dead man's body, drawing him into a new mystery. A strange fresco depicting a riot is his first clue that some secrets can’t be kept.

Among Pompeii's elite, a group of conspirators turn against each other as Tay and Marcellus dig deeper and deeper into their secrets. Few involved know the whole truth; and those who do, have no intention of letting the newcomers find out what they are hiding.

Tay and Marcellus find themselves in the middle of a cover-up. Grasping for the truth, it appears that the suspects may, in fact, be the victims.

Tay realizes that some advice should be taken, while Marcellus discovers few secrets in Pompeii are unknown.

As the readers of the first book in the series would know, Marcellus, a young Roman noble, has fled from Rome to Pompeii after being accused of patricide. He has Tay, an Egyptian slave, with him. As a disguise, Tay assumes the role of a young noble and Marcellus pretends to be his mute slave.

Tay loans out Marcellus (in his persona as slave Demitrious) to do some restoration on a sculpture. While at work in the residence, a man named Celus is killed. Tay and Marcellus investigate, despite many warnings not to do so. It is believed that Celus was killed to silence him as he had proof that a politically influential women named Actia was not killed during the earthquake in Pompeii but had been murdered.

While reading this novel, I keep wondering why Marcellus has to remain a mute. He seems to have garnered the smarts that he needs to function without inadvertently giving himself away. In fact, it would seem that in this book many people have become aware of who he really is.

The book reads rather well and is interesting. But, after a while it can get tiring. There is a lot of political intrigue concerning the deaths and coverups that took place after a riot in the city years before. Most of the murder investigation revolves not around searching for clues but getting everyone's opinions. With so many characters in the book it becomes a bit tiresome to follow as people explain:

"Fannius once belonged to Publius Memmius Regulus...the father of that year's Consul as well as the first husband to Lollia Paulina. ...Fannius came to Pompeii and took up residence in the house of Actia. ...before Actia was a member of Lady Agrippina's court, she was a freedwoman to Lollia... ... Celer warned Valens that Fannius was trouble. Agrippina was jealous of Lollia... [who] had been married to Agrippina's brother.... "

And it goes on and on. After awhile I would just skim over those explanations, and there were a lot of them. There was just too much to try to follow and remember who was who and doing what. There seems to be a lot less of the historical aspects of life in Pompeii as were in the first novel. I really enjoy the characters but near the end I found myself just reading to finish the novel and waiting to be told who the murderer was and why.

Pompeii A Conspiracy Among Friends edition by Robert Colton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I have not read the non-digital editions of Mr. Colton' s books, but have found the editions of the first two volumes in this series maddeningly riddled with punctuation, grammatical, and typographical errors. It's a pity, because the characters and plots are generally engaging and entertaining; however, the books are in desperate need of competent editing and proofreading.
A romp in Pompeii with everyone in, and around, the house Marcellus lives in, seemingly involved, as well as well known powerful elite. The in crowd is outed in this tale.
This is the second book of Marcellus's and Tay's adventures. I loved this book. This time around my favorite character was Gavia. I laughed out loud hysterically when she played that trick on Marcellus! Soooo funny! Even several pages later, I was still laughing. She is wickedly funny!
This is the second novel in the Pompeii series. You should definitely read the first one first else you'll miss out on a lot. Fabulous series thus far, readers of Sayers or Davis will love these. I'm hoping Mr. COLTON, the author has a few more trails an tribulations for Tay and Demetrius! Highly recommended.
This author is not another Rowe or Wishart. The story line is slow moving and not very interesting. The author seems to have a good grasp of Pompeii and the layout of the city. To sort of quote another reveiwer on another book, "This is not a book that should be put asside gentley, but should be thrown with great force!"
I really enjoyed Robert Colton's first book in this series, Pompeii A Tale of Murder in Ancient Rome, but A Conspiracy Among Friends is even better.

The main characters, location and overarching politics have already been established, so we are able to jump right in--and it was so nice to go back to Pompeii. I felt like I was visiting with old friends.

Colton does a great job of painting a picture. This is a very visual book, and I felt like I was on the side of the road, or the back of the room, watching the action unfold.

This is an immensely enjoyable read. I cannot wait for future books!
I was surprised at how different the pacing was from this book to the previous one. The crime happens quickly and the story moves fast. The author picks up on the events in Pompeii right after the last book ends and does a nice job of summing up how the main characters got there without bulking up the second story. With that said I don't think you'd want to read this book without reading the first one.
The main characters are well defined and play off of each other. The residents of Pompeii are sprinkled in to the mix resulting in comic, sympathetic and sinister players in the story.
What I enjoyed most about the book was the story telling, I thought I knew who the murderer was most of the way. The fun was figuring out how Marcellus and Tay were going to figure out what I thought I knew.
