"Once again, best-selling author Amanda Hughes splashes the pages with gritty adventure and love stories about audacious women in the 18th and 19th Century. Her page-turning tales will keep you on the edge of your seat as you take wild rides through dramatic and dazzling periods of history."
"James lifted her out of the tub, water running down his clothing. Her shift hugged her skin, and he ran his eyes down her figure then up again stopping at her lips. The firelight danced over them and for a moment Lauren lost herself. Fear, loneliness, desire all clouded her judgment and she opened her lips to kiss him."

The story was fast-paced with many unforeseen events. I have researched the 1700's of American history and felt the author did a credible job of representing the dangers, hardships, and fear the early settlers experienced. They were incredibly brave and resourceful. Anyone looking for a sweet romance story may be disappointed. Romance takes a back seat to adventure in this book. I enjoyed reading this book.

The Pride of the King Bold Women of the 18th Century Series Book 2 Amanda Hughes 9781463589127 Books Reviews

Odd storyline. You get invested in Lauren’s current life and think, yes, this is what the book is about, then chaos happens and she’s thrown into a new situation so you think this must surely be what the book is about, but no, Lauren has like 5 lives until she meets the other main character James St. Clare (seriously like chapter 27 until she does). Interesting characters that you love and then get killed way too fast. Love the boat of misfits and those that helped/gave up their lives to assist Lauren along the way.
I would have liked to know what happened at the end more and what ever became of “the bad guy” (I don’t want to give it away).
At first I liked the deviation from the standard "flighty/fiesty virgin gets seduced by rogue with a heart of gold" formula. The main character is most definitely not a virgin by the time she encounters our "hero" and is pretty secure with her bold love of life and her decision to experiment with her sexuality....so far so good and a welcome change! Unfortunately nothing much happens from there. The heroine goes through a series of misadventures that quite frankly get a bit old and without at least indulging the reader in any emotional or sensual aspect of her experiences. The "hero" aside from throwing the occasional brooding glance at our heroine basically pimps her out for his own benefit, calls her all sorts of names that would make my women's studies professor shudder and then somehow they magically fall (FINALLY--it take almost the whole book) into each other's arms. When THAT finally happens are you rewarded with any heart-thudding accounts of their union --even poetic in nature (not everyone cares for graphic)? Nope--we skip immediately to the next day and you must imagine what all those years of unrequited, pent-up passion must have felt like. And the ending? I won't spoil it other than to say...abrupt, random and unsatisfactory. This book started with potential but seemed determined to squander it.
This book is a cry for help - from an editor and a proofreader. I got it for free, which is pretty much the right price. (See how I used that comma in the last sentence? The author should try it). This is writing I would expect from a middle-schooler; it lacks subtlety and any sense of the story building. I made myself read 20%, then gave myself permission to give up.
I was riveted to this book from the first chapter....the adventure and dynamic way Amanda Hughes spun this tale drew me like a moth to flame. My only regret was the sudden ending,,,it was very abrupt and left the story dangling for closure. My mind is reeling,,,searching for the next chapter and disappointed she did not complete the tale. I am saddened I did not find book 2 of this great adventure and hope the author will consider to continue,,,,for it is disconcerting to be left dangling like this after such a rich beginning to this great story.
I thought the premise of the book was very appealing. I was drawn into the story as I read about the exploits of a young girl who wanted to"see the world" and then further drawn into reading about her will to survive. While I found the majority of the story to be a page turner there were times I found it to be a bit long winded in descriptive. I also found the end of the book leaving me with an unfinished feeling. I thought to look for Book 3 in the hopes of seeing the conclusion of this story and the beginning of the next but it wasn't there. 3 stars for a good thought, mostly good story, but unfinished ending.
Hughes is a master storyteller, as I learned when I read her first book, BEYOND THE CLIFFS OF KERRY, which I highly recommended. It's a little like following a guide through a maze. You can't envision the next turn so you are glad she is leading you and you can't stop. The ending is very satisfying, I must say.

This one is set in French New Orleans in 1748, and tells the story of Lauren De Beauville, daughter of French aristocrats who died leaving her and her sister orphans to be raised by nuns. When she is 15, her sister joins the order and Lauren is forced to marry an old man from the English colonies who doesn't speak French. She is rescued from that marriage before it's begun by a hurricane that sweeps her away on her wedding day to another life. Eventually she is forced to leave that other life, too, and ends up in New England, where she joins with con artists who use her as bait to lure aristocrats into business ventures.

There are many twists and turns in this complex story that finally sees Lauren onboard a ship of pirates and misfits who serve a master criminal, their captain, who smuggles guns and other goods, selling them to both the French and the English. Captain James St. Clare wants Lauren to be his contact with the French, but it's a very dangerous assignment and she will have to sell herself to accomplish it. All the while she is watched over by St. Clare, an enigmatic figure, to be sure.

Most of the story is told through the heroine's point of view with the exception of short snippets in the minds of other characters. And there is a huge cast of characters as you can imagine from the different "lives" Lauren experiences. You feel for Lauren as a young innocent with an adventurer's heart who faces one crisis after another and yet always manages to triumph. When the black moment comes--and there is a black moment--it is very real and very believable. I loved Lauren's courage and her determination--and her kindness. She's one hell of a woman. No wonder the hero will not give her up.

I can't say enough good things about this book or about Hughes' writing. Just take my word for it and get it and you'll understand. I don't want to give away the mystery by saying more about the story except that she peels back the layers like an onion--expertly. I have become one of Hughes' committed fans.
