After finishing his enlistment in the U.S. Navy, Rob Cohen has returned to his Central Florida hometown. Opportunity is knocking. Whether as a partner in his best friend's start-up company or the young women vying for his attention, things are falling into place. Suddenly, an unexplained explosion and mushroom cloud fill the early afternoon sky. A pair of EMTs rush to the site of the explosion to look for survivors. In the aftermath of the disaster, one victim has miraculously survived trapped beneath the rubble. Unbeknown to the pair, they have stumbled across the remains of a secret military biological research laboratory. The most virulent and dangerous virus man has ever known has been released and their best intentions to save the man's life will have dire consequences. Decisions must be made. Whether it is to help a friend in need or sacrifice two million people, the actions of a few men will impact our country forever. Perhaps even the world.

I liked this book which is the reason for a 4 star on Amazon's scale. However, there were a few things to detract from my own personal enjoyment of the book. First off, let me say this book was well written with just a few typos and grammar errors (missing words). It has action from beginning to end which keeps you flipping pages to see what is coming next, and a main character you can relate to, to keep you reading. That being said, what I didn't like was the fact that secondary characters seemed skeletal and the plot seemed a little rushed. After all, the entire book takes place in a span of less than 24 hrs. It could have been a really great book if there had been a little more detail in certain areas, and a few scenes added to the initial breakdown of Tampa where the book takes place. This is a relatively short book, IMO.

Also, as a note to this author and other Indie/self published authors. Contractions in dialogue are NOT A SIN! Most people, when talking do not say, "I am going to the store." They say,"I'm going to the store." ( This was not taken from the book, but as an example) We are=we're and you are=you're. I actually noticed that there are no contractions used in this book until 57% and not in dialogue intil 86%. (Yes, I know I am weird this way.) I'm only saying this because this makes the dialogue in the book (and others) seemed stilted and not life-like. It actually takes away from the rhythm of the story. I'm not saying to use contractions every time, there is a time and place for everything. Just don't be afraid to use them, ask yourself, does this sound real? Those are just my 2 cents on the subject.

I really enjoyed this book. He was a personal friend of my daughter and me. He passed away in a horrible winter crash a few years ago. I believe he had a talent for writing and did a great job on his first book. RIP Chris!
Gone are the typical "heroes" who always manage to have just enough ammo left. Gone is the ultramalicious government entity just out for itself. Gone are the unbelievable, razor-thin, close calls.

That's what makes this book feel real. From the beginning, you can tell a lot of attention was paid to make every detail as accurate as possible, very little is asked of the reader in terms of "willing suspension of disbelief". You only need to know you're reading fiction, that's enough, but soon, even that fades.

The characters feel very real, pulled from the real world and dropped into a scenario they have no control over. None of the main characters are helpless, however, they manage to adapt what they know to the "new reality" of things. It doesn't always work out for them though, not like the movies. Rob Cohen, for example, is confident, yet falters, he's trained, but he makes mistakes, he could have the girl, but he knows NOW'S NOT THE TIME!

The setting seems very accurate, like you could go walk around and know exactly what happened where. You might even be tempted to go to Tampa, knock on doors, and ask the residents if they've made a recent check in their garage for the un-dead.

Give this book a chance, it's a fairly quick read, and a great re-read. There's even room at the end for a possible sequel...I'm stoked!
